Friday Feature: ‘To my fellow walkers of this earth’ by Austin Sanders

To my fellow walkers of this earth,

In February of 2018 I took part in an experience that has shaped the path of my life. I graduated University in May of 2017 with a degree that was the equivalent to a participation trophy in little league sports. And like many of you, I was feeling lost with no direction. So I packed my bags, and headed out west to the live in a trailer in the Mountains of Northern California. After lots of traveling and alone time to think, I decided to buy a one-way ticket to Costa Rica with the intentions of traveling and volunteering all over Latin America…then one thing lead to another and I found the TEFL school in Playa Samara, Costa Rica…and holy sh!t that place was amazing.

I was stoked to learn how to teach and also improve my Spanish while there but after 6 weeks in Costa Rica the only phrase I learned in Spanish was “Pura Vida,” which can be used for literally anything in that country. But I did learn how to teach…so that’s a plus. The TEFL teachers were qualified and well trained individuals and I learned an incredible amount from them. This school really prepares you to be a confident teacher, even with no prior experience. Barbara, AKA the boss in town,  AKA the CEO, is a badass human being and she helps you with everything, from tweaking your resume to landing you a job during your TEFL course.

After Costa Rica I continued traveling, and backpacked around Latin America slowly making my way toward Chile, where I currently reside teaching English to adults. With my TEFL degree in hand, and the confidence that the school gave me, I am now able to continue following my dream, traveling the world while teaching English.

-Pura Vida-
