Taking the Leap: Pursuing a TEFL Certification in Costa Rica
Katie, a dedicated and adventurous educator from Ireland, took a bold step in her teaching career when she decided to pursue her TEFL journey in Costa Rica. Having previously taught French and Spanish in Ireland, as well as English in France, she had a strong foundation in language education. However, despite her experience, she faced challenges securing a teaching position in Costa Rica. Determined to achieve her goal, she believed that gaining her TEFL certification within the country would provide her with the right opportunities and connections. This turned out to be true!
Choosing Costa Rica TEFL
After extensive research, Katie came across Costa Rica TEFL and was impressed by the glowing reviews from past students. She saw that many graduates successfully found employment within the country, and the lifetime job placement assistance offered by the program was a crucial factor in her decision. Additionally, the idea of completing her certification in the stunning coastal town of Sámara made the experience even more appealing.
“I definitely made the right decision!”
Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience
Katie completed her TEFL certification in April 2024, an intense but rewarding experience that taught her one of the most valuable lessons in her journey: resilience. The course was rigorous and challenging, but she knew it was worth every moment. Beyond the classroom, she made lifelong memories, including an unforgettable trip with two of her peers to La Leona waterfall. They rented a car, went tubing in the river, and hiked through breathtaking scenery, solidifying friendships that would last far beyond the course.

Teaching in Ciudad Quesada
Now, Katie is living her dream, teaching French and English in Ciudad Quesada. The knowledge and skills she gained at Costa Rica TEFL, particularly the innovative teaching techniques and engaging classroom games, have become an integral part of her teaching style. She thrives on seeing her students develop an interest and passion for her subject. Witnessing a once-disinterested student grow eager to learn is what fuels her love for teaching and motivates her every day.
Falling in Love with Costa Rica
Beyond the classroom, Katie has fallen in love with Costa Rica. The warmth and kindness of the local Ticos, combined with the country’s stunning natural beauty, have made her transition seamless. From its pristine beaches and towering mountains to its rushing rivers and lush rainforests, she takes every opportunity to explore with friends—many of whom are fellow CRTEFL graduates. And, of course, she has fully embraced the local cuisine, developing an undeniable addiction to gallo pinto!
A Risk Worth Taking
Reflecting on her journey, Katie acknowledges the immense risk she took—leaving behind a stable, well-paid job, her family and friends, and the comforts of home to move 5,000 miles away. But for her, the gamble paid off. She now wakes up every day doing what she loves in a place that feels like home. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, adventure, and following one’s dreams.
For those considering the TEFL path, Katie’s journey serves as inspiration. Taking that leap of faith might just lead to the most rewarding experience of your life!
