Choosing to relocate to study and teach:
When deciding where in the world to become TEFL certified, there are endless options. However, there is a certain magic about Samara beach, Costa Rica that blends learning with a healthy lifestyle. Aside from gaining classroom teaching skills and cultural immersion, many graduates experience an unexpected shift: their overall health improves. Becoming TEFL certified with Costa Rica TEFL has provided me with the opportunity to work online, set my own hours, and create a healthy indoor/outdoor work-life balance. From fresh food to outdoor living, life in Costa Rica has a way of boosting both physical and mental well-being.
Fresh, Wholesome Food
Costa Rica’s traditional diet is rich in fresh fruit, vegetables, beans, and rice. Meals are often simple yet balanced, providing natural sources of energy. One thing many people notice while in Costa Rica is how easy it is to eat whole, unprocessed foods. The weekly ‘feria’ in Samara offers accessibility to organic, local produce and proteins at an affordable price. Not to mention, there are several locals who sell fish and produce at even cheaper prices giving you the opportunity to support locals as well.
An Active Lifestyle
In Costa Rica, life naturally draws you outside. Whether it’s walking to school, biking through town, hiking rainforest trails, or surfing on weekends, daily movement becomes second nature. Daily tasks such as grocery shopping, visiting a friend, or attending a class can unexpectedly increase your weekly cardio. In Samara, there are other luxuries such as kayaking to Isla Chora, or beach pilates/yoga that offer the opportunity to stay physically fit on a daily basis. Many TEFL graduates find themselves more in shape and physically healthier after living here for even a short time.
Stress Reduction Through “Pura Vida”
Costa Rica’s famous motto, Pura Vida, translates to “pure life.” For the people here it means living slower, calmer, and more mindfully. The laid-back culture encourages balance, gratitude, and enjoyment of the present moment. In an environment like an intensive TEFL course or teaching in a school, emphasis on taking breaks and letting go of stress allows for a better work-life balance. Many businesses take long lunch breaks, giving people the opportunity to get some vitamin D, fresh air, or a good cup of coffee with friends. Little additions like this within the day make a work day less daunting and negative.
A Natural Boost From Sunshine and Fresh Air
With its tropical climate, Costa Rica offers plenty of sunshine year-round, which can help boost vitamin D levels and improve mood. As someone who teaches online as well as working in the Costa Rica TEFL office, having the opportunity to spend break times outside in the sun has drastically changed my mental health. With endless possibilities to be at the beach, in the rainforest, or in the mountains, living in Costa Rica is sure to improve your quality of life. Sometimes, quick escapes to the beach at lunch or the national parks over the weekend is all you need to reset your mind before hopping back into the work week.
Community and Connection
While moving away from your home, Costa Rica’s warm and welcoming culture makes it easy to feel at home. The magic Samara offers comes from the connection between the natural world and the people. Expats and locals bond together in a way that is unique and friendly. For newcomers to town, they often feel a sense of community quickly due to the welcoming nature of the people here. Between host families, fellow teachers, and new friends in the community, you’ll gain meaningful connections that support emotional well-being and help to alleviate loneliness. Getting to teach locals while taking my TEFL certification as well as continuing to teach in the community has brought me joy that has improved my mental health significantly. Giving a sense of purpose to your life while simultaneously making lifelong connections is something Costa Rica has gifted so many Costa Rica TEFL graduates.
