If you’re considering taking a TEFL course, one of the biggest questions on your mind is probably:
“What kind of job can I actually get after this?”
The short answer? More than you think. In my experience, you really never know what opportunities await you! Your TEFL certification could take you down paths you never knew existed, or that you never knew you’d even enjoy.
A TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification opens doors both abroad and online. Whether you’re dreaming of beach towns, big cities, or working remotely from your laptop, TEFL can be the first step toward a flexible and meaningful career.
Let’s talk about some of the options that await you!

🌍 1. Teaching English Abroad (The Classic Path)
The most popular route after completing a TEFL course is teaching English in another country. For higher income, places like Asia and the Middle East are the way to go. Most Asian countries will cover the costs of visas, travel, living expenses, and benefits. This basically means you go to make a great wage, with the ability to save most of it. Places like Central America don’t offer as high of wages, but allow for rich cultural experiences. You are paid enough to live comfortably while experiencing a very balanced lifestyle that emphasizes enjoyment and a less work-focused life. Of course, there aren’t just two options of places in the world. With a TEFL certificate, you have the world at your fingertips in terms of where you want to teach.
Teaching abroad can include:
- Private language academies
- Public schools
- Private bilingual schools
- International schools (often require additional qualifications)
Many teachers choose countries like Costa Rica because of the lifestyle benefits. Warm weather, lower cost of living, and an emphasis on work-life balance are things that we don’t often experience in North America. Having to adapt to a new work environment can be challenging yet rewarding in ways you never knew were possible!
💻 2. Teaching English Online
If relocating isn’t for you, teaching online is a rapidly growing option. Many of our graduates who want to live by the beach and teach in Costa Rica opt for these options. I personally have taught online for almost two years, both part time and full time. It’s a well-paying option once you build up student clients and work to establish meaningful relationships with your students. It’s possible to work from anywhere, create your own schedule, as well as set your own rate. This option gives you the ability to travel freely to any location and work within the confounds of your own freedom.
- Work for established online ESL companies in Costa Rica
- Teach through platforms like Cambly or Preply
- Build your own student base independently
- Offer business English or conversation classes
Online teaching gives you location flexibility. Many TEFL graduates combine online teaching with travel or use it as a side income. Personally, I have really enjoyed being able to teach online, live abroad, and travel while still working! I have travelled around Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and to visit my family in Canada all while still teaching my online students! I live by the beach and have the ability to create my own schedule and hourly rate. I highly recommend teaching online, even on the side while you have another job!

🏫 3. Teaching English in Costa Rica
If you complete your TEFL course in Costa Rica, you will find local opportunities right away. If you are interested in teaching online, we work with several online schools that will hire our trainees even before they graduate! We even offer info sessions during the course with these schools so that you can learn about different opportunities here.
Common positions include:
- Private language institutes
- Local schools
- Corporate English training
- Private tutoring
Costa Rica has a steady demand for English teachers, particularly in business and tourism-heavy areas. While salaries may not be as high as some Asian countries, the lifestyle trade-off is often worth it.
📚 5. Career Expansion Opportunities
TEFL can also lead to related fields, such as:
- Academic coordination
- Curriculum development
- Teacher training
- Education consulting
- Starting your own language school
- Content creation for ESL materials
Many people take TEFL as a starting point and discover they love working in education. You never know where it could lead you! I never would have expected to be working at Costa Rica TEFL in a non-teaching role when I was completing the course! Many doors you never would have expected will open for you after becoming TEFL certified.
🌴 Final Thoughts
A TEFL certification is more than just a qualification, it’s an opportunity to create the lifestyle and career you want. Whether you dream of teaching abroad, working online while traveling, tutoring privately, or building a long-term career in education, TEFL gives you the flexibility to choose your own path. The real value of TEFL is the freedom it offers to work, travel, and grow on your own terms.
