Deb was an all-star TEFL teacher in training during her course here in Playa Samara! After she graduated the program in April of 2015, she went on to teach at Intercultura in Heredia, Costa Rica. We just received an update from Deb, and here is what she had to say:
“My name is Debra Winsor. I am 45 years old and I became an English Teacher 6 months ago. I work with children ages 9-12, teenagers ages 13-17 and adults ages 18-55. I have 3 Intro classes and 3 kids classes. I run a class called Rock Star which is a conversation class four days a week. It is a free way students can practice speaking. I created a tutoring class for my kids so they can get some extra help at no cost to the parents. I had a young boy who was failing all of his tests but now he is passing every test!!! YAY! I have also created extra conversation classes for my students. The more practice the get speaking English the more confident they become. I cried when I found out that I received the highest student evaluation score out of all of the teachers, 98.2% out of 100%!
I work very hard to be the best person and then the best teacher that I can be. I have learned so much in the 6 months that I have been teaching English. There is never a dull moment. I am constantly learning about grammar, my students, myself and about life. I feel extremely grateful for this. I have made some amazing friends from all around the world and from Costa Rica.
I enjoy going for a good hike on my day off. I work 6 days a week but only 21 hours. Of course, there are like 20 hours of planning haha. So, only having one day off I really try to take advantage of it. I takes walk, for exercise, daily so I get to explore the city of Heredia which is really fun. The weather is really awesome for morning walks.
This has been a life changing experience. I love being able to brag and hype up my experiences to people that are thinking about getting their TEFL Certificate. It is a great feeling when you have found your niche. Even at my age!!!”
