Friday Feature: Vincent’s Interest in Teaching and Cultures

Meet Vincent! He’s a 29 year old from California, United States, who is now living and teaching in Santa Ana, Costa Rica. Vincent has some experience teaching in the United States and in China, which sparked his interest in teaching in various places and learning about many cultures.

What is he up to?

Vincent completed his TEFL certification at Costa Rica TEFL in August 2023. He is currently teaching fourth grade English and social studies in Santa Ana, Costa Rica. In addition, he is an assistant coach for the high school basketball team.

His typical teaching day slightly varies depending on if he is coaching or not. Generally speaking, he teaches Monday through Friday from 7:30am – 3pm and coaches after school two days a week. He also does after school tutoring when he has the time.

Experiences at Costa Rica TEFL

Vincent experienced a lot during his time at Costa Rica TEFL and in the town of Sámara For one, he loved the town and the beach. Additionally, he was able to form incredible bonds and friendships with his peers and locals. His current roommate and colleague was also his peer during his TEFL course.

Furthermore, he noted his gratitude for our director, Barb, with all of her guidance and support through the program and still to this day. Vincent said, “Barb will always have a special place in my heart. She is one of the most genuine people I have ever met”.

What more did Vincent get out of Costa Rica TEFL?

Many of the skills that he learned at Costa Rica TEFL are used in his classroom now, especially games. Vincent says the games and activities that he uses are great to keep the class engaged and interested.

The most valuable lesson that he received from his course was that learning does not have to be boring nor do you have to lose your interest in teaching. He says, “[Learning] can be fun, engaging and above all effective using the styles that I learned at Costa Rica TEFL”.

What inspires Vincent?

There is a simple answer to this question: the youth. He believes that we should do as much as we can for the youth because they are our future. We couldn’t agree more, Vincent! His favorite part of teaching is the feeling of fulfillment. It means the world to him when his students and athletes are thankful for him.

What advice can Vincent offer to those considering a TEFL certification?

He says, “Just commit and do it! It’s a big world out there, don’t wait too long and miss out on incredible opportunities!” An experience like this will change your perspective on life and allow you to prioritize what is most important to you.

Vincent’s life in Costa Rica outside of teaching:

Costa Rica feels like home to Vincent. In his free time he plays basketball, reads, draws, cooks and likes to try new restaurants. He loves to be surrounded by the locals because he can see and feel the joy, soul and life that they possess. It truly is a ‘pura vida’ lifestyle. Vincent says, “There is nothing equivalent to living in a foreign country and absorbing the culture, language and energy”. We feel the same way, Vincent!

How does immersing yourself into a different culture sound? Are you ready to take on an opportunity with the one life you have like Vincent did? Do you have an interest in teaching? Listen to his advice and don’t wait too long, just commit and do it!
